At Story's Edge

Spaceship flying over an alien planet
Flying over a new world

That's the thing about starting a new story.

You never know quite where it's going to go. Sure, you may have mapped out a course, highlighted a few key points along the way, and even sketched out the ending. Along the way, however, it's likely to take some unexpected turns. A new story is all about the possibilities.

Anything can (and might) happen as it develops. Characters enter the story and take on a life of their own. The plot you end up with may not be what you had in mind when you started.

That's what I love about starting to write a new book. I may have an idea of where I think it will go, but it will probably surprise me. I want it to do so. The book should be as much fun for me to write as it is for someone to read.

Today, I'm only a few thousand words into a new book. I've got ideas for the future, but I'll have to see where this one goes. You just never know.
